Chicago Northwest Tourism welcomes the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Opening July 31 in Schaumburg;

First Indoor LEGO World in U.S. Offers Two Floors of Fun

The Woodfield Chicago Northwest Convention Bureau (WCNCB) is pleased to welcome the LEGOLAND Discovery Center.  The attraction is a giant indoor LEGO world designed for families with children aged 2 to 12, opens its first location outside of Germany on July 31 in Schaumburg’s Streets of Woodfield shopping center northwest of Chicago. The site features two floors of life-sized LEGO adventures as well as hands-on LEGO play designed to provide several hours of family entertainment centered on the iconic interlocking colored bricks.

 “This is an amazing addition to our region and Illinois, particularly for family activities and attractions”, states Fran Bolson, President of the WCNCB.  “The location is perfect for residents as well as visitors to the Chicago metro area.  LEGOLAND rounds out our Family Fun offerings with GameWorks right next door, Medieval Times, and CoCo Key Water Resort; both within a few miles.”

The 30,000-square-foot center combines theme park-like attractions with a vast ‘Build & Test’ area where young LEGO enthusiasts can build to their heart’s content and test their creations on earthquake tables and racing ramps. Guests can also take a dragon ride through a medieval castle filled with LEGO characters, explore a jungle trail populated with LEGO animals, and hang on to their 3D glasses in a 4D LEGO movie theater where LEGO creatures are brought to life and special effects take viewers straight into the film.

Other highlights include a ‘Hall of Fame’ with superheroes built from tens of thousands of LEGO bricks, a LEGO Factory Tour that shows how LEGO bricks are made, and a miniature LEGO version of Chicago’s skyline. The center also features a DUPLO play area for younger children, birthday party rooms, a LEGO café, a LEGO store, and brick-by-brick LEGO building sessions with a master model builder.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago/Schaumburg will be open from 10am to 7pm every day except Christmas. Regular admission prices are $15 for children, $19 for adults, and $17 for seniors. Annual passes are also available.  Birthday packages are $19.75, $22.75 or $29.75 per person. Parking is free.

“Walking into the LEGOLAND Discovery Center is like walking into a fantasy world. There are fresh LEGO ideas, life-sized LEGO masterpieces and LEGO-related things to do in every square inch of the space,” said attraction manager Mike Pastor. “It’s a great family outing as well as a travel destination for families, and it’s the only one in the U.S.”

LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago/Schaumburg is modeled after a prototype that debuted in Berlin last year and that now attracts more than 500,000 visitors annually.  A second German location opened in May in Duisburg.

All locations are run by Merlin Entertainments Group, the world’s second largest visitor attractions operator after Disney with 58 attractions ranging from Madame Tussaud’s to outdoor LEGOLAND theme parks and other top-ranked theme parks in 12 countries on three continents.  Merlin is partially owned by The LEGO Group.
